It’s been 6 years since I’ve been regularly out chasing the northern lights in Canada, something that’s not been so easy since moving back to the UK. Solar cycles are usually 11 years in length and we are currently approaching what is known as a solar maximum. This is when the Sun’s activity builds up massively with solar flares and coral mass ejections (CMEs) which if directed towards Earth allow for major displays to be seen in lower latitudes. Eventually the Sun will settle back down to a minimum before a new cycle begins. Recently we’ve been having very intense solar storms reaching KP7 and KP8 which provides lots of opportunities to see them across the UK and beyond. This series of images were taken in South Oxfordshire and shows how the evening of March 23rd 2023 progressed into some spectacular views across Farmoor Reservoir.
